FANGST & AVLIVNING Fangst av vågekval i Norge foregår i et rolig tempo ved at båten enten legger seg i ro og venter på at kvalen skal komme på skuddhold, eller manøvreres mot det stedet hvor den ventes å komme til overflaten neste gang. Trekker kvalen vekk, siger båten etter. Kvalen jages ikke, det blir ikke stresset, men plutselig – i skuddøyeblikket - er livet slutt. Til avlivning brukes harpunkanon og harpuner med to mothaker (klør) og en sprenggranat med det supersoniske sprengstoffet pentritt montert på spissen. Det er sjokkbølgen fra granaten som dreper kvalen. Norge har vært et foregangsland i å utvikle ny teknologi og mer effektive fangstmetoder for å avlive kvalene raskt. THE HUNT AND THE KILL The Norwegian minke whale hunt is normally conducted at a slow pace with the boat either staying still and waiting for the whales to appear within range, or by manoeuvring towards the place where a whale is expected to surface. If the whale moves away, the boat moves slowly after it. The whales are not chased, they are not stressed by the hunt, but suddenly – as the shot is fired - their life is ended. To make a kill, the whalers use harpoon guns and harpoons with two barbs. An exploding grenade containing the supersonic explosive penthrite is screwed onto the point of the harpoon. It is the shockwave from the exploding grenade that kills the whale. Norway has been a pioneer in the develop- ment of new technology and more effective hunting methods designed to kill the whales instantly.
